Spring 2015

And now presenting the award for…. >>>

2015 Diamond Awards for Engineering Excellence
by Corey Fenwick

The annual Diamond Awards for Engineering Excellence was held March 2 at the Hershey Lodge in Hershey, PA. Known to many as the “Academy Awards” of the industry, nearly 40 projects completed by ACEC/PA member firms were recognized. Through exceptional planning and engineering design, the award-winning projects significantly contribute to the quality of life for Pennsylvania’s citizens. This year’s winners strengthened our infrastructure, enhanced public safety, raised the engineering professional’s profile, and offered sustainable, economical solutions for clients and taxpayers. This was a herculean feat considering the economic turmoil we faced in Pennsylvania and across the nation.

The winning projects are as diverse as the firms involved with their designs. A Diamond Award is a tribute to not only the winning project and its engineering firm, but also to the clients, owners, subconsultants, contractors, and everyone who played a role in turning these projects into reality. The winners embody the spirt of teamwork. A distinguished and diverse panel of highly qualified judges with extensive experience in their chosen fields reviewed this year’s entries. Winning the Grand Conceptor, the project deemed the Best in the Commonwealth, was the I-81 River Relief Route Emergency Design Work by Gannett Fleming and PennDOT District-8-0. Also recognized at the event was Montgomery County, and specifically, its Commissioners Josh Shapiro, Leslie Richards, and Bruce Castor, as the 2015 Client of Distinction. The award recognizes those public and private sector individuals or groups of individuals who make outstanding contributions to advancing and growing the consulting engineering profession. Montgomery County has continuously exercised fair business practices when contracting for engineering contracts. The County values transparency and efficient use of tax payer funding.

Sandi Loy-Bell of SKELLY and LOY, Inc. was honored with the Distinguished Award of Merit. The award recognizes an individual in the engineering profession who has made an outstanding contribution to the advancement of the consulting engineering profession and service to ACEC/PA. Ms. Loy-Bell has been an outstanding member of the engineering community for over 20 years; more than 30 if you consider that she grew up helping her father, Bud Loy, make copies, run blueprints, and fold maps at his engineering firm.

Scholarships Now Available through ACEC/PA

by Jennifer Smeyers

The Eric J. Gennuso and LeRoy D. (Bud) Loy, Jr. Scholarship Program was created in 2013 to honor two of ACEC/PA’s members. Eric J. Gennuso was the son of ACEC/PA’s 2013 Distinguished Award of Merit winner, Donald Gennuso of SAI Engineering. Eric died suddenly in February 2013, after his father received this prestigious award for his long-time industry services. ACEC/PA decided to honor Don’s son by naming the first ACEC/PA scholarship after his son Eric. Then in April 2013, our industry had another loss as LeRoy D. “Bud” Loy, Jr. passed away. Bud founded the firm Skelly and Loy, Inc. in 1969, was an active in ACEC/PA member throughout his long career, and received the ACEC/PA Distinguished Award of Merit in 1998. With Bud’s passing, ACEC/PA chose to award a second named scholarship to honor Bud’s for his outstanding contributions to the consulting engineering industry.

ACEC/PA will be offering at least two $5,000 scholarships with the possibility of more.  I encourage you to pass this application on to your respective alma maters, colleagues, or anyone you know who may have a potential interest in this great program.

This year ACEC/PA has moved to an online application portal for the scholarship in order to streamline the process for both the students and the judges.

To help spread the word about this opportunity; ACEC/PA has created a recommended Tweet and LinkedIn/Facebook posts for you to use:
