THE PRESIDENT'S SAY

News from ACEC/PA President Don Gennuso

On May 12, 2009, I attended the Legislative Reception at the Harrisburg Hilton. This opportunity not only allowed us to meet one-on-one with legislators to discuss the issues that directly impact businesses, but, because the meeting is personal, it puts a face to the issues. And, discussing the issues face-to-face gives us that rare instance to make our issues “human and real” to those who have some influence on the laws that ultimately shape our businesses.

Considering that there was a change in schedule for both the House and the Senate, the reception was well attended by over 100 people. In addition to talking with our legislative leaders, a lot of networking took place among firm representatives. It was a great opportunity to discuss teaming, business issues, etc.

I extend a special thanks to Jill Thompson, chair of the Government Affair Committee; all members of the Committee; Andy Hilt; and the ACEC/PA staff for their efforts in organizing this successful event. I hope you will make plans next year to attend. The Legislative Reception is a wonderful opportunity to have your concerns heard and to give a human face to those concerns.

During the Reception, the 50th Anniversary booklet made its debut. Congratulations to Kate Sherman for a fine commemoration. A copy of the booklet was mailed to each firm, and one is available on the ACEC/PA Web site.

Our next Board of Directors meeting will be held on June 10, 2009, at the Colonial Country Club. This meeting is an important starting point for our organization because we will meet with our committee chairmen and/or their representatives to discuss any issues they might have, discuss goals for the coming year, and provide them with any direction they may need.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, the challenges we face with respect to the successful implementation of a vibrant highway reauthorization bill are real. Given some of the issues ahead of us, you can see why it is important to support ACEC and give them the necessary resources to fight for the best outcome for the highway industry and the traveling public. With that said, I strongly encourage you to contribute to ACEC PAC. They are our best organized effort to get the job done!

Don Gennuso
President, ACEC/PA
