THE PRESIDENT'S SAY

News from ACEC/PA President Don Gennuso.

As President of ACEC/PA, I wish to thank everyone for the privilege of serving in this office for an impressive organization. The symbolic passing of the gavel took place at the Annual Meeting at the Hyatt Regency Resort and Spa April 15-19. Some highlights of the event were the learning sessions, which included “Mutual Gains,” presented by representatives of the Florida Department of Transportation; “Design/Build Strategies,” presented by Skanska (one of the largest Design/Build contractors in America); “Reauthorization of the Highway Bill” presented by representatives of ACEC; “Water Management in Collier County, Florida”; and the sessions on risk management and benefits.

I extend many thanks to Past President Chet Allen and the Planning Committee for organizing this memorable event.

Normally at the annual meeting, the incoming president announces the dates and location for next year’s event—ah, but this year we will keep you in suspense just a little longer.  An announcement for next year’s Annual Meeting is forthcoming in June, and the board and I promise another informative and unforgettable event with fellow ACEC/PA members. Stay tuned!

This year ACEC/PA has a number of issues that require our efforts and attention—most importantly, the Highway Reauthorization Bill. As we learned at the Annual Meeting, Dave Raymond, Steve Hall, and the ACEC staff are prepared and knowledgeable of the issues. They provided us with facts and projections on numerous facets of the pending highway legislation as well as information on other potential legislative initiatives, such as climate change legislation that could greatly impact our industry and business.

Some “challenges” we face to successfully implement a “vibrant” highway reauthorization bill include:  Resistance to a gas tax increase by the current administration, budget deficits, limited options for raising revenues,  legacy fights (urban versus rural/donor versus donee), to name but a few. Given some of the issues ahead of us, you can see why it is important to support ACEC and give them the necessary resources to fight for the best outcome for the highway industry and the traveling public. That said, I strongly encourage you (okay, ask you) to contribute to ACEC PAC. They are our best organized effort to get the job done!

Further, I want to urge all of you to become involved in ACEC/PA. By joining one of our committees or a transportation sub-committee you can become actively involved in the latest developments in your area of interest and make a difference to the industry as a whole.

I look forward to working with each of you, and together let’s make our industry strong.

Don Gennuso
President, ACEC/PA
