 Spring 2015
 Barry A. Epley, President, ACEC/PA

ACEC/PA Members,

It has been an honor to lead this amazing organization for this past year, but soon it will be time to hand over the gavel. Here is what has been happening.

Congratulations to Tom Cushman, P.E. from AECOM, for submitting the winning name for the newsletter, "Keystone Connector." Tom will receive an ACEC/PA "goodie bag" and one free attendance to any Chapter or GAC meeting in 2015.

Federal Transportation Reauthorization.  Although a long term solution has not been passed to date, ACEC/PA is working hard to lobby for this cause. As part of ACEC National’s Annual Convention, our group will be traveling to Washington, D.C. in mid-April to speak with the Pennsylvania delegation in order to keep our efforts moving forward.

Member retention and recruitment.  Our Association is only as strong as its members.  As of March 2015, ACEC/PA has 129 member firms and 22 associate members and have continued to add firms through this past year.  Not only have we added new firms but employee counts (index numbers) at our member firms are beginning to increase as well.  While it is important to actively recruit new members to ACEC/PA, it is equally if not more important to retain those that we have.  Our Membership Committee has continued to work with others and staff to advance the “value of membership” in our Association with specific targets for both recruitment and retention.

Association Non-Dues Revenue Generation is up significantly for the year. Chapter, Government Affairs Committee, and other meetings have generated $20,000 more than the last year, resulting in a 37 percent increase. The golf outing, Diamond Awards, and other special events have generated more than $15,000 as compared to the previous year, resulting in a 38 percent increase in revenues generated. It has been a stellar year to say the least and along with the increase in membership and employee counts has helped bolster and stabilize our financial standing as an association.

Political Action Committees.  Through the push for Act 89 and as we continue our work in Washington DC, we have learned that our PAC creates opportunity for our organization to be heard and recognized.  It is vitally important that we support those elected officials that support our industry and let them know that they have our backing.  Our state and federal PACs are critical tools that we use to keep ACEC/PA and ACEC National in the sights and minds of our leaders.  We raised almost $19,000 for our state PaCE PAC.  ACEC/PA members contributed $37,329 to the ACEC National PAC, exceeding our goal for the eighth year in a row.

Goals for 2015:

PaCE PAC - $25,000

ACEC PAC - $33,262

PAC contributions are critical to our effort to secure a long term transportation funding bill at the federal level and to protect Act 89 funding at the state level.  We need to keep our issues at the forefront of the conversation.  Please consider joining us in making a difference.

The ACEC/PA Brand.  Through the efforts of the Public Relations Committee and the ACEC/PA Director of Marketing, we have continued to enhance our brand as THE go-to organization for the transportation industry in Pennsylvania and consulting engineering community. We have received media and public recognition for our numerous events over the course of the year. The 2014 Eric J. Gennuso and LeRoy (Bud) D. Loy, Jr. Scholarship Award, the scholarship golf outing, and the 2015 Diamond Awards for Engineering Excellence were all covered by local and state news outlets via a press release or camera coverage of the event.

Trade Association Partnerships.  ACEC/PA has worked collaboratively with our partner industry associations (APC, PAPA, APCA, PACA, and CABA) in an effort to foster partnership and quality with our clients in PennDOT and the Turnpike Commission. We have jointly focused our efforts on workforce development, process control and technical QA/QC. Each section has a team leader as we move forward (together) to break down those barriers that are preventing the industry and the owner(s) to cooperatively bring project quality and partnership to a new standard.

This initiative began last summer and it still continues to move forward as both sides are fully engaged. Expect good things to come.

Other news: The 2015 Diamond Awards for Engineering Excellence were a success thanks to the ACEC/PA staff and the Public Relations Committee. I would like to extend a special thank you to Maggie Moore, Chair of the Diamond Awards Committee, for the amazing effort she put forth to make the Diamond Awards the premier event for our members.

This year ACEC/PA has moved to an online application portal for the Eric J. Gennuso and LeRoy D. (Bud) Loy, Jr. Scholarship Program in order to streamline the process for both the students and the judges. To date, we have from last year, thanks to the hard work of our Marketing Director, Jenna Earley; Public Relations Committee Chair, Laura Frein; and the rest of Public Relations Committee. The golf outing, held in September of 2014, raised $14,365 for the scholarship fund, which will allow for two or more engineering students to receive the funds again this year.

Although my year is soon coming to an end, I look forward to continuing to work with ACEC/PA as your Immediate Past President and in the future.  You will have an excellent Board leading you in 2015-2016 under the leadership of Sean Henderson.
